Resource types in Optix are categories that group together similar resources and apply shared settings across them. You can customize the availability, visibility, booking experience, and app display of your resources using types.
Using resource types helps you:
Stay organized: Group similar resources and apply shared parameters in one place
Control the booking experience: Choose whether users pick a specific resource or book from an open pool
Customize the app: Set how resource types appear on your members' home screen
Save time: Apply availability, time selection, and visibility settings to an entire category at once
How to create a resource type
How to create a resource type
To create a resource type, go to Resources > Resource Types in your web dashboard and click Add Type in the top right corner.
Step 1: Name & Visibility
Name the resource type and set its visibility in the app. If you choose not to show the type in the app, click Save to finish. If you want it visible to members, continue through the following steps.
Step 2: Resource Showcase and Selection
Choose between Gallery and List view. Read this FAQ for more details on how each view appears in the app.
If you select List view, you'll also choose between Specific and Non-specific resource selection:
Specific — users pick a particular resource (e.g. "Desk 4")
Non-specific — users book the type (e.g. "Hot Desk") and Optix assigns an available spot automatically. Good for open seating where the exact spot doesn't matter.
Non-specific resources: how available slots work
The number of available booking slots is determined by the number of individual Resources assigned to that type — not by the capacity field on a single Resource. Capacity refers to how many people can occupy one resource simultaneously, not how many separate bookings can exist at the same time.
To offer 10 open seats, create 10 individual Resources and assign them all to the same Non-specific type. Use the duplicate feature in Resources → All Resources to do this quickly. You can give all resources the same name — users will only see them as a single grouped booking option.
Step 3: App Placement
Choose which home screen button this resource type appears under in the app. You can add it to an existing button (e.g. "Desks") or create a new one with a custom name and icon.
Step 4: Time Selection
Set how users select booking times. With Free select, users pick any time within your availability settings. Alternatively, you can create time slots for more structured booking — you can have as many per day as you like, and they can overlap. Time slots will supersede service hours.
Hit Save. Your resource type is now ready — go to Resources → All Resources to create or edit resources and assign them to this type.
Note: The order in which Resources are listed is not customizable. Optix takes several factors such as availability, capacity, and price into account when displaying resources. |
FAQs
FAQs
What is the difference between Specific and Non-specific resource selection?
With Specific selection, users choose a particular resource to book (e.g. "Desk 4" or "Meeting Room B"). With Non-specific selection, users book the resource type (e.g. "Hot Desk") and Optix automatically assigns an available spot from the pool. This is ideal for open seating where the exact seat doesn't matter.
Does setting a high capacity on one Resource give me more open-seat booking slots?
No. Capacity controls how many people can occupy a single resource at the same time — it does not create additional bookable slots. To increase the number of available open seats, create more individual Resources and assign them all to the same Non-specific type. For example, to offer 10 simultaneous open-seat bookings, create 10 Resources. Use the duplicate feature to do this quickly, and give all resources the same name since users only see them as a single grouped option.
Can I give all my Non-specific resources the same name?
Yes. Since users never see or select individual resources in a Non-specific setup, using the same name for all underlying resources is recommended. Optix groups them into a single booking option in the app and drop-in flow.
